Here is a commission I took to rebind a first edition of Senlin Ascends. The first two books in the Books of Babel series were originally self-published, and those editions are harder to find. I was asked to rebind 2 copies with matching slipcases.
I kept the original cover to use as a frontis. The art is so perfect that I wanted to preserve it with these editions.
This is a 3-piece casebind, using Brillianta cloth and a marbled paper from India. The plumes of color on the black base of this marbled paper are striking.
The edges of the text block were painted black with watercolor, and finished with a coating of renaissance wax.
The slipcase is made using the same cloth as the spine. The first slipcases that I made I wasn’t happy with how they stood, on their own they looked fine, but next to each other they didn’t line up nicely. So I recut and created new ones. I still have the original uncovered slipcases, I’ll most likely hunt around for a book they fit and cover them to match.
For endpapers I used a heavy black canson paper, their mi-tientes line. It has a rough texture I like, and provides a balance to the thick cardstock the original cover uses.
